What We Don’t Do
At Taku Fisheries in Juneau, Alaska, we’re proud of what we offer. In an industry where shortcuts are common and profit can come before principle, we hold a firm line. Our standards mean making deliberate choices, not just about what fish we sell, but how it’s caught, processed, and handled. Here’s a look at what we intentionally avoid, so you can feel confident about what’s on your plate.
We Don’t Sell Farmed Fish
Everything we offer is 100% wild-caught in Alaskan waters. That means:

No crowded fish pens

No antibiotics or artificial feeds

No color additives to dye the flesh
-
No waste runoff into sensitive marine environments
Farmed fish may be cheaper, but it lacks the flavor, nutritional profile, and integrity of wild seafood. We believe the natural diet, life cycle, and migration of wild fish make a difference you can taste.
We Don’t Use Harmful or High-Impact Fishing Methods
The gear used in fishing matters. We only work with local boats using methods that are selective, sustainable, and low-impact:

Troll-caught Salmon (hook and line, one fish at a time)

Longline-caught Halibut and Cod (minimizes bycatch)

Pot-caught Crab and Shrimp (lets undersized or female crabs escape)
You won’t find trawl-caught fish on our site, no dragging nets across the seafloor, no industrial-scale harvests that damage habitat or indiscriminately capture marine life. Our partners are small-boat fishermen who know these waters and respect their limits.
We Don’t Offer Non-Alaskan or Imported Seafood
We’re laser-focused on Alaska’s own resources. That means:

No imported tuna, shrimp, or Chilean sea bass

No Atlantic species

No mystery fish from vague sources
Every product we sell is caught, processed, and packaged in Alaska, often within hours of landing at our dock in Juneau. We don’t rely on distributors or middlemen, and we never resell third-party seafood.
We Don’t Overprocess or Overhandle Our Fish
Many commercial seafood companies gas, bleach, or chemically treat fish to alter its appearance or extend shelf life. We don’t.
Here’s what you won’t find in our products:

No nitrogen flushing to fake freshness

No phosphates or “plumping agents”

No thawed-and-refrozen fish
We flash-freeze our fish at peak freshness and vacuum-seal it immediately. You get the product almost exactly as it was caught, nothing more, nothing less.
